My approach as a psychotherapist is a humanistic and integrative one. This approach places high value on the human relationship between client and therapist and how this can support a helpful integration of past experience into the present.
I began my psychotherapy training while teaching in state secondary and tertiary education. The emphasis of my work at that time was in the pastoral care of young people and the teaching of classical languages and the appreciation of world history and culture. The subject gradually became a means for exploring universal themes about ourselves as human beings and our relationships with others. I became interested in the personal resources we need for living well and how as individuals we are affected and influenced by our wider, historical environment and the natural world around us.
